When does Direct Mail work the best?

Here are some tips on when direct mail should be your first marketing choice. Keep in mind that the more of these tips that apply, the more likely it is that direct mail will be your best bet.

  1. If you can clearly define your target audience, direct mail will work. Direct Mail is about targeting. The more precisely you can identify you best prospects, the greater the likelihood of success.
  2. Whether your sales message is short or long... direct mail works.
  3. Direct Mail works when you need to control the entire selling process. You don't want layers of contact between you and the decision maker.
  4. When other distribution channels don't work as well as going direct to your audience.

I agree with you 110% about targeting your list especially when you wholesale and sell to other businesses. You can have the greates plumbing tool in the world, but if you send your offer to a bunch of dentist, you wont do well

The high cost of postage, printing and of course most importantly "UP TO DATE LISTS THAT TARGET YOUR MARKET!!!!!" can be very costly.

I sell products to spas and hair salons and I used to send 1500 full colour flyers in one mailing. I spent thousands between printing, envelopes, stamps and lists that were outdated. I doubt if 65% of the mail I created made it into the hands of the beauty outlet I wanted to reach.

I found this company that does b2b co-op mailings. They actually have various non competetive suppliers all share one large beauty supply envelope and then they co-op mail to 5,000 spas and salons in one mailing. They only allow about 20 (non competetive) supplier in the envelope. You can just rent space in the envelope or they offer a full print and mail package. Now I spend hundreds instead of thousands. Reach 5,000 instead of 1,500. They have their own list creators do very accurate lists and it shows because my response return is much higher. Im pretty sure they do mailing for all industries. I noticed a pet suppliers envelpe and tradesmens mailing and gift stores, not sure what else but you can browse through the site www.suppliersandcontacts.com Its the only company I have ever found that co-op mails to mass quantities specific to all who ride in the envelope.

Targeted mailings work great, however they are so costly to do alone. Co-op targeted mailing at least allow you to afford to reach 5000+ industry specific targets without breaking your bank account
